Well, my predictions were a bit messed up due to Blokey not showing up, but he hadn't played much since the c58i tourney, and had uni starting on that day, he did however show up later to watch the final games. Well now onto the main subject of this column, which is the already played UK WCG Q3 Qualifiers in London.
We arrived at the venue at around 8:45am (me and delt) with only 3hours sleep and a cup of tea to get us there. At 9am we were free to enter the massive building, and were on our way to find the WCG Qual area and get set up for the upcoming games. I had already pre-qualified, but there was still a chance for people who had not qualified for the main qualifier in the morning, which my friend delt was going for as he had not pre-qualified. delt basically breezed through the pre-qualifing games in the morning, and was set to play in the main event without a problem.
I managed to sort out my mouse sensitivity to be exactly the same as it is at home, but I had to change my config a bit so that the monitor could display a refresh rate of 120hz.
All the qualified players had to wait till around 3pm, although the games were supposed to start at 1pm. Carmac was about, and had a quick chat with me and Sid before the start of the games (you can read the short interview over at esreality by clicking here). The seedings were based upon last years qualifier results, so Blokey would have been seeded 1st and Sid 2nd, but with the absence of Blokey, Sid was seeded 1st and I was seeded 2nd and delt was seeded 4th, although who was seeded 3rd is a mystery to me. Anyway, as the day progressed we saw our first upsets and interesting matches of the day.
Early on the most interesting match would have probably been the Sid vs Hell game on ztn3tourney1. Hell is a very good ztn player, and he proved it after he beat sid in overtime, the game was really close all the way, and the scores were tied at the 10min mark (10min game). As the game went into overtime the scores were 6-6, and around 1:30mins into overtime time, Hell managed to pull off a frag to take the match, 7-6. Sid was pushed into the losers bracket, but these 2 players would meet again in a losers bracket match on pro-q3tourney4, which Sid would win.
I had a pretty successful campaign in the winners bracket, probably because I didn't meet anyone extremely good till the semi-finals, where I played Hell on q3tourney2, he had a very good starting spawn by the YA, and I had the RL spawn. I went up the jump pad to follow him through the teleporter, and managed to rocket him over the YA on the LG side, but I didn't frag him. He had a very unfortunate slip into the pit without any intervention from me, which was a bit funny :), but it made my life easier, so I won the match, with the scores 11-7 if I remember correctly.
Now I was waiting for the winner of the losers bracket final, in the grand final on the stand, and ofcourse Sid pulled through, to face me in the final. Well those last 2 games were almost 2 of the most intense games I have ever played, and I hope he felt the same way :), but he managed to take both maps, pro-q3tourney4 was the most exciting game, and ztn3tourney1 was really much more relaxed, as he had control, and I made a few mistakes.
wp m8:)
So Sid won a £1,500 flat screen TV, and a ticket to South Korea to participate in the WCG finals. I won an £800 digital camera (which is very nice might I add:)), and the right to participate in the WCG finals in S.Korea.
Obviously I can't really afford something as expensive as that, and I'm currently looking for a way to get it all sorted out so I can go.
Hell (aka Tok'ra) came 3rd, and won a £500 15" TFT Flat Monitor.
Drifter came 4th and won a £150 mp3 player.
I'm defo happy with my 2nd place, and I hope that Sid does well in his group, and I also hope I get a chance to see how well I might do in my group at the WCG.
I would also like to say thanks to everyone who's supported me in any way possible, which would be my clan (gunzoids), and my friends.. you know who you are:) and also my family! I'm only saying this because in my mind I have reached the goal I set out to reach around 10months ago, to get a placement in this years WCG, and I'm really happy because of that.
Make sure you people follow the WCG Qualifiers in Holland, cos i'm sure there'll be some very interesting and exciting games to watch, gl to all the participants and most importantly hf! |
