Lexx: Alright, my first question will be as follows: were you contacted by CXG staff, our you offered covering the event yourself?
djWHEAT: We originally spoke to Syn (who was admining the Q3 portion of the tournament). He wanted to make sure that the Q3 portion of the tournament had good coverage, so he came to us to find out if we could cover it. Unfortunately, due to costs and short notice, we could not attend the event live, so he did everything in his power to allow us to connect to the tournament servers so we could broadcast from home.
Lexx: I see. Did you have any thoughts in your head during day 1 that this tournament will turn out to be a disaster?
djWHEAT: I think we were very aware of the possibility of the tournament being a complete disaster... but that wasn't going to stop us from trying to bring the best coverage that we could. With many of the delays which took place (including the CRT/LCD issues) we were definately thinking to ourselves, "Do you think this will ever start?". But we had alot of confidence in the admins of the Q3 Tournament so we stuck it out until the games began.
Lexx: The first big shock was the cancellation of CS tournament. I've read that you were really shocked and couldn't actually believe this. What happened next?
djWHEAT: Well, I was shocked. I'm not a huge CS fan, but I knew that is was a major portion of the tournament. I originally had heard the rumor via a PM that I received from a listener on IRC. I wanted to check to see if the rumor was valid, so I set up a phone interview with [3D]-Torbull (the Manager of Team 3D). Sure enough once we got him on air, he filled everyone in on the decision that was made and the reasons for it. It was really nice to be able to break that news from cXg with some proof behind it, because I can only imagine what people were saying and what rumors were started. By the way, that Interview is available for download.
Lexx: Do you believe the so called "sabotage" version that Joe Hill is trying to convince everyone?
djWHEAT: Absolutely not. I find it very hard to believe that any of his alligations are true. I don't know just exactly how much mud has been thrown from cXg to Valve and other competitors, but blaming mistakes on other companies (who've never had this problem before in the past) is pretty weak. I think this display of actions poorly represents their organization... even more than the actual failure of the event.
Lexx: After reading the statement from CS-team a-Losers that their expesnses weren't actually paid back at all, and the only thing they've got refunded were the hotel expenses. Do you actually believe that the winners will get their prizes after all?
djWHEAT: Hmm... There is a part of me that wants to believe that prizes will be given to the winner. We all know they certainly deserve it after what they have been through. Unfortunately, after seeing the series of events which occured in Las Vegas, I have to cast a shadow of doubt on their ability to pay out to the winners. If you look at some higher profile tournaments and the way they handle their payouts, you'll notice that some players have never been paid, or waited a very long time to get paid. Now consider the method in which this tournament was organized and implemented... it doesn't seem like they can follow through. I just hope that they prove myself and everyone else wrong... by paying the winners, and reimbursing those who they said they would reimburse. Actually, on the other hand... paying the winners is cXg's only saving grace right now. Already you have a handful of people who won't attend another cXg event. They could possibly salvage some of those lost players if they kept their word.

Lexx: Do you think that this event hurt the overall prestige and development of e-sports scene?
djWHEAT: As much as I want to say "No". The answer is "Yes". The reason why is as following: After this tournament, I began speaking with teams and/or players who may have been sponsored by some of the same sponsors as cXg. Many of them reported that the sponsor had contacted them concerned about their position/status as a sponsor. Now I'm obviously not going to name specifics... But I believe the cXg hurt the development of E-Sports like this. 1> When an event turns out this bad... players/teams have a harder time trusting "new" leagues and tournaments. 2> As stated above, sponsors have a bad taste in their mouths... whether or not this will effect their sponsorship of other e-sports related events/teams/activities... I don't know. But it certainly seems to have opened sponsors eyes to make sure they are putting their money into good endevors.
Lexx: Do you believe that there will be CXG2?
djWHEAT: Man that is a really tough question. I'll be honest, if I was Mr. Hill, I would get out of the e-sports scene for quite some time. But I have this sinking feeling that cXg will attempt a comeback. But can people trust them anymore? Making one or two mistakes and learning from them is one thing... completely dm11'ing the entire event... how do you bounce back from that? Lack of trust makes me think this will be cXg's first and last outing.
Lexx: Will the perfect coverages that you've made during the event be available for download?
djWHEAT: Well we've already released many of the interviews that we did throughout the broadcast, and we plan to eventually release the match broadcasts as well. As you know our webpage is almost completed, and we will make them available for download once it's officially open.
Lexx: Aight, are there any future plans for iTG? Will you try to attend or do a coverage for QLAN2/ESWC etc?
djWHEAT: There are definately plenty of future plans for iTG. In fact, in our eyes we haven't even officially launched, we've just been doing one big giant server stress test I think we'd really like to do coverage for both QLAN2 and ESWC, as well as any other major community supported events. We also are about to cover GGL's 1st Online Finals in which they'll be giving away Alienware computers and other prizes. We're really anticipating our launch and announcing new tournaments as we schedule coverage.
Lexx: What can you say about other tournaments being either cancelled or not played at all? The whole "you should leave the area and we will shutdown the power" thing makes me horrified
djWHEAT: It obviously shows an incredible lack of organization at the event. Take the Q3 tournament for example. When they finally shut down the power, the Q3 tournament only had 2 or 3 matches left to go. I figured after the complete failure of other tournaments, they would want to save as much of their event as possible... instead, they just cut them off like all the rest. I hope more than anything, that other event admins/organizers use cXg as an example on how NOT to run a major event.
Lexx: What is better, cancelling some of events, or not paying back the prize money? Of course both things aren't good at all, but still. Clikarena, PG Challenge - they didn't pay the winners, meanwhile CXG was cancelled..
djWHEAT: Well, neither scenario is beneficial to the players or the spectators. I am a firm believer that if you win, you damn well better get paid. I suppose I would rather see a tournament cancelled than see a player who has busted their ass to earn that money get screwed by not receiving payment. Lexx: You can say that to the PGC winners... Twice
Lexx: Do you watch Sex in the big city?
djWHEAT: I don't. Probably the only HBO series I don't watch. |
